Search for any new movie online and within seconds you will meet them: websites promising “Full HD download in 480p, 720p, 1080p — free!” Almost all of these are illegal, and many are outright scams designed to infect your device or steal your data. Here are seven reliable warning signs to help you recognise and avoid them.
1. The site offers movies that are still in theatres
No legal platform streams a film while it is still in its theatrical run. If a website offers a “HD print” of a movie released last week, it is pirated by definition — and the quality will be a shaky camcorder copy anyway.
2. Endless pop-ups, redirects and fake buttons
Legal streaming sites are calm: you press play, it plays. Piracy sites monetise through aggressive ad networks. If clicking anything opens new tabs, triggers redirects, or shows fake “Your phone is infected” warnings, leave immediately.
3. It asks you to install something
“Download our app”, “install our player”, “enable this extension to watch” — these are classic malware distribution tricks. Genuine platforms are available from the official app stores, and none of them need a custom video player.
4. Requests for personal details or payments to unknown parties
