Parental Controls on Streaming Apps: Complete Setup Guide for Parents

Streaming gives children access to extraordinary films — and, without controls, to content meant for adults. Every major platform offers parental controls, but most parents never turn them on. This guide walks you through setting them up properly on each app.

Why certificates matter here

Content ratings are the backbone of parental controls. Just as theatrical films carry U, U/A and A certificates, streaming platforms tag each title with a maturity rating. Parental controls work by filtering these ratings — you set the ceiling, the app enforces it.

Before you begin: the family plan structure

Most platforms support multiple profiles per account. The single most important step is creating a dedicated kids profile for children — a walled garden of age-appropriate content with its own recommendations and watch history. Keep one adult profile PIN-protected so children cannot simply switch out of the kids profile.

Setting up controls, platform by platform

Netflix

1. Account → Manage Profiles → Add Profile (choose “Kids”).
2. For any profile: Profile → Maturity Settings, and lock with a PIN.
3. Set a 4-digit profile lock on adult profiles so kids cannot open them.

Prime Video

1. Settings → Profiles → create a Kids profile.
2. On adult profiles, set Viewing Restrictions by rating through Profile settings.
3. Enable a PIN through Account & Settings → PIN.

JioHotstar / Disney+ Hotstar

Create a Kids profile from the profile picker, and use parental settings on the account to restrict mature content on other profiles with a PIN.

YouTube (regular and Kids)

For younger children, use the YouTube Kids app entirely. On regular YouTube, enable Restricted Mode in settings, and supervise through Google Family Link for under-13 accounts.

Purchases and in-app spending

Parental controls govern content — purchases are a separate door. Set up purchase authentication on Google Play and the App Store so a child cannot rent or buy content. On smart TVs, enable the store’s PIN requirement.

Screen time, not just content

Most apps have no built-in time limits, so use the phone’s own tools: Google Family Link (Android) and Screen Time (iOS) cap daily app usage per child account. Combining content filters with time limits is the complete setup.

Practical family rules that work

• One kids profile per child — recommendations stay age-appropriate and siblings do not fight over history.
• The TV in a common room beats controls every time — family viewing together is the healthiest habit of all.
• Review the kids’ watch history monthly — it tells you what controls missed and what they actually enjoy.
• Revisit ratings yearly — a 9-year-old outgrows the profile you made when they were 6.
