Tamil Cinema Terms Explained: From Kollywood to First Look and More
Fan pages and film news use a vocabulary all their own — “first look”, “puja ceremony”, “censor certified”, “day one collection”. If you are newer to following Tamil cinema, this glossary will help you follow every announcement like a veteran.
Kollywood
The popular name for the Tamil film industry, formed from Kodambakkam — the Chennai neighbourhood where many studios were historically based — and Hollywood. Like Bollywood for Hindi cinema, it is an informal label, not an organisation.
First look
The first officially released image of a star in an upcoming film — often a poster revealing their character’s appearance. First looks are events in themselves and kick off a film’s marketing cycle.
Pooja ceremony
The traditional inaugural prayer ceremony held before shooting begins. Photos of the cast and crew at the pooja formally mark the launch of a project.
Teaser vs trailer vs song promo
- Teaser: a short, punchy preview (under a minute) released early to build anticipation.
- Trailer: the main two-to-three minute preview released closer to the release date.
- Song promo / lyric video: a single song released ahead of the film to promote the soundtrack — a huge part of Tamil film marketing.
Audio launch
A public event where a film’s full soundtrack is released, often with the cast on stage and speeches that frequently go viral. For big films, audio launches are held in stadiums.
Censor certified
Means the film has cleared CBFC certification and received its rating. Announcing “censor complete with U/A” signals the film is one step from release.
Box office terms
- Opening / Day 1 collection: ticket sales on release day — a measure of a star’s pull.
- Weekend / opening weekend: the crucial first Friday-to-Sunday window.
- Break-even: the point where collections cover the film’s budget and marketing costs.
- Verdict terms: hit, super hit, blockbuster (big profit), average (barely recovers), flop (loss).
OTT and satellite rights
OTT rights are the licensing fees a streaming platform pays to host a film; satellite rights are what TV channels pay to broadcast it. Pre-selling these rights is how many producers finance films safely before release.
Distribution territories
Tamil Nadu is divided into release areas (Chennai city, Chengalpet, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, and so on). Trade reports break collections down by territory — that is why you see phrases like “strong in Chengalpet”.
B-grade / parallel cinema / indie
Terms for films made outside the star system — smaller budgets, newer directors, festival circuits. Tamil indie cinema has grown into a critically acclaimed space of its own.
Re-release
A classic film returning to theatres, often for an anniversary. Re-releases of beloved classics regularly sell out even decades later — proof of how deep Tamil cinema’s legacy runs.
